The Constitution Under Attack

The U.S. House of Representatives voted 219-212 on Sunday night to socialize health care in the United States, making the government the paymaster of, and giving it sweeping regulatory authority over, the U.S. health care industry which represents one-sixth of the U.S. economy.

The legislation also enacts a dramatic and unprecedented diminution in the individual liberty of citizens. It does so by mandating that all Americans buy a government-approved health care plan while redistributing wealth on a massive scale by promising annual federal insurance subsidies to all Americans who earn less than 400 percent of the poverty level, which is currently $88,200 for a family of four.

Attorney Generals from Virginia and South Carolina will both file law suits protecting the people of their States by challenging the federal government's overreaching action in passing and signing mandated health insurance on individuals.

Claiming a statistical majority in the Senate and House allows Democrats to "make the rules as we go," the legislation ignores congressional rules and the Constitution. The health reform legislation mandates citizens to purchase and states to manage health insurance under a combination of the commerce clause and a "we can do whatever we want" attitude of Democrats.

The commerce clause does not apply because federal law prohibits and continues to prohibit buying insurance across state lines - interstate commerce.

How did we get here?

The Republican Party lacks principles and integrity!

Rhinos support Democrat policies and principles and are frequently former Democrats who "bought" the Republican label. They vote for expanded state and federal centralization of power, abortion, and vote for tax and spend policies. They are not liberals. Liberalism today means, through Democrat actions, to destroy and work around the Constitution.

Liberals are traditionally against strong federalism and place the Constitution as the benchmark to their liberalism. The Constitution was founded and is a product of "classical liberalism." Any government mandates, abortion (in the health reform legislation), purchases of commercial goods and services are not sanctioned under the Constitution.

Republicans can be liberals without violating the conservative and constitutional principles the party has developed as their platform. There are no punitive actions against Republican candidates and office holders who routinely violate the platform planks.

For decades, when in power and when out of power, Republicans have continually worked across party lines to support statist and unconstitutional spending and mandates on citizens and states. The question is, "Can Republicans be trusted to find their roots" when it comes to the Constitution, classical liberalism, and modern conservativism?
